Reception Weekly News Autumn Term 2022
Week Commencing 12 December
As a Reception team (Mrs Freer, Miss Burns, Miss Smith and Mrs Pugal), we would like to thank you all so much for the very generous Christmas gift we received! We have all really enjoyed working with your children this term, and we have seen so much progress in all aspects of their development. We wish you all a very happy Christmas and new year.
NSPCC Pantosaurus
This week, we followed the lesson plan from the NSPCC to talk to the children about the NSPCC’s Underwear Rule. There is a great song that goes alongside it, and it gives important messages to the children. If you would like to listen to it or listen to it with your children, the link is below.
Talk PANTS with Pantosaurus and his PANTS song #TalkPANTS
Library books
The children have selected their own book for you to share together again this week. Some children forgot their books this week, so please make sure the books are in their bags every Monday. We will send slips back to remind you if they haven’t brought a book back for a few weeks.
Reading books
Thank you for encouraging your children to practice reading their books and for keeping them in the front pocket of their bags, this has been helpful when the children have read in school and needed their book changed. Please read the book each day with your child, so they develop fluency reading the words. Some children have started to bring home a ditty sheet instead of a book, so the children need to practice reading those instead of a book whilst they are in that phase of the scheme.
Phonics
The children are working in their groups to either revisit sounds that they need to learn, learn new sounds or apply what they’ve learnt reading short sentences.
Please look back at previous emails for videos of the individual sounds, if your child needs extra practice with individual sounds.
Question of the week
This week we have been thinking about, How are special times celebrated?
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been learning about The Christmas Story. We have recapped our nativity show and discussed why Christians celebrate Christmas. We have learnt the new vocabulary: religion, culture, stable, manger, bauble, wreath, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Maths
In mastering maths this week we have been working on the stable order principle – rehearsing the order of the first 5 numbers and understanding that the position each number holds in our number sequence does not change. While continuing to work with numbers to 5, the children have been developing their understanding of the ordinal aspect by investigating the difference in value of consecutive whole numbers. They have spent time discovering that each number has a value of 1 more than the previous number. They used blocks and squares to order quantities from 1 to 5 to embed this key understanding.
In addition, the children have been revisiting the concept of equals and linking it to shape. They have been using time words such as first, next, last and day and night vocabulary.
Cooking
We are continuing with our pasta salad recipe. The children are continuing to work on their chopping skills.
Thank you for your continued support.
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 5 December
Nativity
We hope you enjoyed the Nativity performances if you managed to attend. We were delighted with the children’s performances.
Library books
The children have selected their own book for you to share together again this week. Some children forgot their books this week, so please make sure the books are in their bags every Monday.
Question of the week
This week we have been continuing to learn about people who help us, and our question is, how do people in our community help us?
Phonics
The children are working in their groups to either revisit sounds that they need to learn, learn new sounds or apply what they’ve learnt reading short sentences.
Please look back at previous emails for videos of the individual sounds, if your child needs extra practice with individual sounds.
Rhyme of the week
In place of the rhyme of the week we have been practising our songs for the Nativity performance.
Literacy
This week we have been continuing to read the book Zog and the Flying Doctors to support our topic ‘People who help us’. We have been discussing the characters feelings and learning the new words: ‘swished’ and ‘exhausted’.
Maths
This week the children have been perceptually subitising (seeing the quantity without counting) in increasingly complex arrangements. For larger quantities, the children have begun to use skills of conceptual subitising, which is beginning to quickly see the sub-groups within these larger numbers.
We are developing the skill of visualising; so, the children looked carefully at the arrangements of dots and then closed their eyes and explained what they saw. Using spatial language to describe sub-groups within these arrangements helps deepen the children’s understanding of part–whole relations and allows them to further consider composition (the numbers within numbers).
In addition to our subitising work we have been continuing to look at making 4 and 5 in different ways on a 5 frame and finding 1 more and 1 less than an amount.
Cooking
We have been continuing with our pasta salad recipe. The children are working on their chopping skills.
Mystery visitors
Thanks to Rev'd Matt Broughton, from St Giles Church in Bramhope, who came to talk to us about why Christians celebrate Christmas, and he talked about why Nativity plays are performed.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 28 November
Nativity
We look forward to seeing you at the Nativity performances next week.
Times and dates:
Class RF Mrs Freer Wednesday 7th December at 9:30
Class RB Miss Burns Thursday 8th December at 9:30
Please can you bring in the clothing you have been asked for on Monday if you have missed the Friday deadline. We want to make the outfits as simple as possible so let us know if you’re struggling to get what you’ve been asked for.
Library books
The children have selected their own book for you to share together again this week. Some children forgot their books this week, so please make sure the books are in their bags every Monday because they will only be able to choose a new one if they have returned their old one. If they forget their book, we will not be doing visits on other days because we have other learning opportunities on other days, so they’ll have to wait until the following week.
Reading books
Thank you for encouraging your children to practice reading their books and for keeping them in the front pocket of their bags, this has been helpful when the children have read in school and needed their book changed. Please read the book each day with your child, so they develop fluency reading the words. Some children have started to bring home a ditty sheet instead of a book, so the children need to practice reading that instead of a book whilst they are in that phase of the scheme.
Please keep practising with the sound cards to learn all the sounds if they don’t know them all. Last week’s email had an attachment with the sounds cards if you need them.
If you’re not sure how to pronounce the sounds correctly, follow the link HERE and this will help you.
Question of the week
This week we have been learning about travel and the question is 'how do people in our community help us?'
Phonics
The children are working in their groups to either revisit sounds that they need to learn, learn new sounds or apply what they’ve learnt reading short sentences.
Please look back at previous emails for videos of the individual sounds, if your child needs extra practice with these.
Rhyme of the week
In place of the rhyme of the week we are learning songs for the Nativity performance.
Literacy
This week we have been reading the book Zog and the Flying Doctors to support our topic ‘People who help us’. We have been predicting what will happen next and looking at the main characters in the story.
Maths
We are revisiting the concept of equal in our mastering maths, using numbers to 5.
We have also been looking at different ways 4 and 5 are represented. The children have been introduced to a 5 frame. This helps them to visualise the number and notice how many spaces have been filled and how many are empty. When there are 5 counters on a five frame we talk about it being full. Children can look at a 5 frame and know how many there are without counting.
You can also see from the diagram that shows the red and yellow counters that the children can talk about the composition of 5. e.g. 3 red counters and 2 yellow counters make 5 counters.
Cooking
This week we have begun a new recipe, which is pasta salad. The children are continuing to work on their chopping skills.
Mystery visitors
Thanks to Mrs Limaye who came to talk to us about her role as a GP, which has helped us learn about people in the community who help us.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 21 November
Nativity
The children have been assigned their parts and a letter has been sent home informing you what they need to wear and the words they need to learn. Please can the outfits be in school by 1st December in a named bag. We want to make the outfits as simple as possible so let us know if you’re struggling to get what you’ve been asked for.
Library books
We have begun our weekly library visits this week, now that the new library is up and running. The children have selected their own book for you to share together. Library visits will be on Mondays, so please make sure the books are in their bags every Monday because they will only be able to choose a new one if they have returned their old one.
Please keep practising with the sound cards to learn all the sounds. Last week’s email had an attachment with the sounds cards if you need them.
If you’re not sure how to pronounce the sounds correctly, there is a link below to help you.
Question of the week
This week we have been taking a scientific approach and looked at forces. The question is, How do things move and change form? We have been looking at the forces of pushing, pulling and gravity. We have been making playdough and making ramps to see different forces in action.
Phonics
The children are working in groups to revisit sounds that they need to learn. Please look back at previous emails for videos if you want to watch them.
Rhyme of the week
In place of the rhyme of the week we are learning songs for the Nativity performance.
Literacy
This week, our focus text is Newton and me by Lynne Mayer. We have been using this text to introduce the children to forces, develop vocabulary and encourage questioning minds. In the children’s play-based learning time we have set up opportunities for the children to explore forces for themselves.
The story is about a boy, who whilst playing with his dog, discovers the laws of force and motion. Told in rhyme, Lynne Mayer's Newton and Me follows these best friends on an adventure as they apply physics to throwing a ball, pulling a wagon, riding a bike, and much more.
Maths
This week, the children have built on their understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the composition of 3, 4 and 5. Composing and de-composing numbers involves the children investigating part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 3 can be composed of 1 and 2. Through practical experience, they have been consolidating their understanding of a whole being made up of smaller parts. They have begun to recognise that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways.
Have a look at the Numberblocks episode which we watched in class, link HERE.
We have been thinking about shapes, involving naming and describing circles and triangles and finding out what happens when we rotate shapes. We have been using positional language including the vocabulary, under, over, on, between, around, in front, behind and next to.
Cooking
The final house group have been making their fruit kebabs, which have been a huge success. We have been extremely pleased with how well the children have taken to chopping the fruit.
Mystery visitors
Thank you to Fiona Hadfield for bringing in a skeleton and speaking to us about joints. She explained that joints can wear out and sometimes people need replacement joints. She showed us some of the replacement joints that are used.
Thank you for your support
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 14 November
Reading books
Please ensure that the books come to school every day and are in the front pocket of their bags. The books are small, and their bags are big with different compartments, so we think the best solution is to keep them in the front pocket. Please read the book each day with your child, so they develop fluency reading the words.
Please keep practising with the sound cards to learn all the sounds. This week there is an attachment with the sounds cards as there are some sounds that we have learnt that you didn’t get in your pack at parents evening. Click HERE to view. Please only look at the first 18 pages. The children haven’t learnt the sounds beyond page 18.
If you’re not sure how to pronounce the sounds correctly, there is a link HERE to help you.
Question of the week
This week we have been learning about travel and the question is: Are all areas on land the same? This is a geography link and involves learning about the countryside, cities, towns and villages.
Phonics
The new sounds that the children have been learning are ng and nk, this week. To support you at home here are some links for the sounds.
ng - https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/KAyzNFQT/UfVfpb8m
nk - https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/3gkU1iyX/SSbXWJmr
With Read Write Inc we assess the children around every 6 weeks, so the children have been reassessed this week, and they have been regrouped according to the sounds they still need to learn. All groups will be recapping to some degree for the next week or so. Therefore, as we have shared all the videos for set 1 sounds we won’t be adding more videos for the time being.
Rhyme of the week
In place of the rhyme of the week we are learning songs for the Nativity performance.
Literacy
This week, we have been reading Town Mouse and Country Mouse. We have been discussing the vocabulary city, town, village and countryside and discussing the main features of each one. We have been learning that Bramhope is a village, Otley is a town and Leeds is a city. You could point out the key features of the place that you live and discuss if your house is in a village, town, city or in the countryside.
We have been continuing to write Helicopter Stories together and acting them out as a class. The children are getting more confident every week.
Maths
This week in Maths, the children have begun to explore composition by focusing on the preliminary skills: the concept of ‘wholes’ and ‘parts’. By investigating their own bodies and familiar toys, they have begun to understand that whole things are often made up of smaller parts and that a whole is, therefore, bigger than its parts.
Have a look at the Numberblocks episode which explains parts and wholes: Numberblocks-series-1-12-the-whole-of-me
We have been looking closely at dominos to find amounts. We have been matching, sorting, finding 1 more and 1 less, as well as continuing to use the vocabulary more and fewer.
We have been practising how to form the numbers and to help us we have used rhymes.
0 Around and round and round we go, when we get home, we have a Zero.
1 Start at the top and down we run, that’s the way we make a one.
2 Around and back on a railway track, two, two, two.
3 Around the tree and around the tree, that’s the way we make a three.
Cooking
Last week we started our cooking groups. Our recipe at the moment is fruit kebabs, and our skill is chopping. Using a tool such as a knife is a fine motor skill and takes concentration and hard work. We were delighted with how well the children chopped their fruit. Adults challenged the children to put the fruit on the skewer in a repeated pattern and some children did this. They loved eating the fruit kebab after they had made them. As we explained at the meetings, it will be one house group a week doing cooking because we want the children to develop their skills, and this will take time.
Mystery visitors
This week Ralf’s dad came to talk to us about his hobby, riding off-road motorbikes. He has taken part in many exciting races across the world. We’d like to thank him for bringing in his bikes and equipment for the children to look at and ask questions about.
Please let us know if you would like to come and talk to the children about your job, a hobby or a festival you celebrate.
Dental Health
Dental health is an important part of our PSED program in early years. A dental nurse visited us to talk about the importance of cleaning our teeth twice and a day for 2 minutes. It would be great if you could continue to talk with you child about dental hygiene.
Thank you for your support.
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 7 November
This week some children have brought home reading books if they are ready for them. Please ensure that the books come to school every day and are in the front pocket of their bags. The books are small, and their bags are big with different compartments, so we think the best solution is to keep them in the front pocket. Please read the book each day with your child.
Please keep practising with the sound cards to learn all the sounds.
If you’re not sure how to pronounce the sounds correctly, there is a link HERE to help you.
This week we have been learning about travel and the question is; How was transport different or the same in the past?

Rhyme of the week
This week we have learnt the song, twinkle twinkle little star, with actions.
Literacy
This week, we have continued to read the book, The Hundred Decker Bus by Mike Smith. We have been looking at the characters in the story and learning the new vocabulary ‘clanking’ and ‘replied’. We have also been learning about different types of transport through our non-fiction texts. The children have been learning to vote for the text they want to be read.
We have been continuing to write helicopter stories together and acting them out as a class. The children are getting more confident every week.
The Hundred Decker Bus - Story Read Aloud by Big Fox
Maths
This week in Maths we have been building on our learning of more and fewer by introducing the vocabulary 'equals'. The children now understand that it means 'the same as'.
We have looked at numbers 1, 2 and 3 by finding representations of the target number. We have been practising how to form the numbers and to help us we have used rhymes.
0 Around and round and round we go, when we get home we have a Zero.
1 Start at the top and down we run, that’s the way we make a one.
2 Around and back on a railway track, two, two, two
3 Around the tree and around the tree, that’s the way we make a three.
Using cutlery
In the children’s choosing time (continuous provision) we have put out knives and forks with the playdough for the children to practise using knives and forks. Please encourage your child to practise cutting up food using a knife and fork at home. This is a difficult skill so they will need lots of practise.
Mystery visitors
Last week we welcomed an air traffic controller, Mr Gibbons, who spoke about his job and taught us about different types of aeroplanes.
This week Mr Farrant (our site manager) came to talk to us about his job in school and how the children can help to look after their school environment.
Please let us know if you would like to come and talk to the children about your job, a hobby or a festival you celebrate.
Thank you for your support,

The Hundred Decker Bus - Story Read Aloud by Big Fox
Maths
This week in Maths we have been learning the quickest way to make 5 on our hands.
We have looked at repeated patterns and the children have continued the pattern and made their own patterns.
Things to work on at home
You should all have some sound cards at home now. Please practise these as often as possible to secure your child’s recognition of each sound.
Here is a link to help you to practise the sounds correctly - LINK
Please keep practising putting on coats and cutting up food use a knife and fork at home. These are difficult skills, so they will need lots of practise.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 17 October
We hope the parent meetings held this week were useful. It was great to meet with many parents to discuss how well the children have settled into school.
This week we have been learning about colours.
We have learnt that the primary colours are blue, yellow and red and that you can mix two colours together to make a secondary colour, such as purple, orange and green.
The children have experimented with colour mixing using powder paints.
As Diwali is during half-term we asked Mrs Chauhan (who works in the school office) to come and be one of our mystery visitors this week, to talk about Diwali as a Hindu festival. During our end of day sessions, we have watched some videos and discussed how Hindus celebrate Diwali.
Phonics
We have been learning the sounds f,e,l,h,r this week. To support you at home here are some links with the sounds we have learnt this week.

Rhyme of the week
This week we have learnt the song; 'I can sing a rainbow' Link Here
A number of children have risen to the challenge of performing the rhyme to the rest of the class, in small groups.
Literacy
We have been reading books relating to colour mixing. These include; Mix it up, White Rabbit’s colour book and Mouse Paint.
Maths
This week in Maths we have been learning to use the stem sentences;
____ has more than _______ e.g. Tom has more sweets than Tim
____ has fewer than _______ e.g. Sophie has fewer sweets than Sam
Please note we use the word fewer when we compare a group of objects that can be counted, for example sweets, shoes, cars. We use less than when we compare things that we can’t count for example rice and sand.
We have compared height, using the vocabulary taller and shorter, size using the vocabulary bigger, smaller and length using the vocabulary longer and shorter.
After half-term we are going to be finding out about transport and people who help us.
The first week back our focus will be, how do we travel to different places (local and further afield)?
When you are out and about over half-term, please talk about the different vehicles you see to prepare the children for our topic.
Things to work on at home
You should all have some sound cards at home now. Please practise these as often as possible to secure your child’s recognition of each sound.
Here is a link to help you to practise the sounds correctly.
Now that it is getting cold the children need to be able to put their coats on and zip them up. We have been teaching them in school and encouraging them to help their friends, but someone to practise at home with and the expectation that they will have a go would be a very good way of encouraging them to develop these skills.
Likewise, It has been observed in the dinner hall that children are struggling to use a knife and fork. Please can you encourage your child to have a go at home.
Thank you for your support.
Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week commencing 10 October
This week we have been thinking about what our school environment is like, which links on well from last week, when we thought about belonging to our school. When we have been thinking about our school environment we have linked it to seasons and observed the leaves falling and the changes that are happening in Autumn. Some children have been developing their gross motor skills by helping to sweep some of the leaves up to help us look after our environment.
We went to our first assembly on Monday, which was taken by Mrs Colbourn. She talked about the school rules and the children sat and listened well.
Phonics
We have been learning the sounds o,c,k,u,b this week.
To support you at home here are some links with the sounds we have learnt this week:

Next week in Phonics we will be introducing the sounds f,e,l,h,r and consolidating the sounds taught so far.
Rhyme of the week
Each week we learn or practise a rhyme because in Reception children should have the opportunity to perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and it builds vocabulary. This week we have learnt the song One man went to mow. A number of children have risen to the challenge of performing the rhyme to the rest of the class, in small groups.
Literacy
We have been reading a diversity book about a girl who finds it difficult to make friends. It is called Meesha makes friends. A few children said they had the book at home.
In literacy we have read the book ‘A stroll through seasons by Kay Barnham. Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA3Md43Gw0I
We predicted what the book would be about based on the front cover. We talked about the 4 seasons and which season we are in now. We talked about some favourite phrases which the children repeated in the story.
We have introduced new vocabulary; flutter
Maths
This week in Maths we have been subitising to 4 which is the instant recognition of number, without counting. Using 4 cubes we looked at different ways to make 4. You might like to watch the numberblocks series on 4 - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08d61cv/numberblocks -series-1-6-four. The children have been encouraged to use positional language to describe the different patterns you can make with 4 cubes.
We have been looking at matching things that are the same and things that are different and sorting into two groups.
In Reception we will be working on deepening the knowledge of numbers to 10. It is very important to develop a strong foundation of numbers to 10 which will be built on over time as they progress through the school.
Next week we are going to be thinking about the question, how can you make different colours? We have some stories about colour mixing and the children will have the opportunity to colour mix using powder paints.
Things to work on at home
Now that it is getting cold the children need to be able to put their coats on and zip them up. We have been teaching them in school and encouraging them to help their friends. Someone to practise on at home and the expectation that they will have a go would be a really good way of encouraging them to develop these skills

Mrs Freer and Miss Burns
Week Commencing 3 October 2022
This week we have been thinking about where we belong. We have thought about belonging in our homes with our families and our families aren’t all the same. We belong to our school, Bramhope Primary school and within school we belong to a class and a house. We also belong to a variety of community groups, which may include religious groups.
Phonics
We have been learning the sounds i, n, p and g this week and in addition to this we have completed a word time lesson where we spend time working on finding the correct letters to make a word. To support you at home there are some links with the sounds we have learnt this week:
i - https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/6Tn8Cvie/yBctiXQC

Next week in Phonics we will be introducing the sounds o, c, k, u and b and consolidating the sounds taught so far.
Rhyme of the Week
Each week we learn or practise a rhyme because in Reception children should have the opportunity to perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and it also builds vocabulary. This week we have learnt The Animal Fair - https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-the-animal-fair/z766wty
Literacy
We have been reading a couple of our diversity books relating to belonging:
1. Two homes
2. Golden domes and silver lanterns (a book about Islam)
In literacy we have also been introducing ‘Helicopter stories’
Helicopter Stories involves scribing stories from children and supporting them to act out their narratives. Initially, children gather around a taped-out stage and stories are acted out. As the year progresses, the stories move from being written by an adult, to the children being encouraged to write parts of their own stories. Children are motivated to become an author, tell their story and are proud to see their story being acted out by their peers.
Maths
This week in Maths we have been learning about the composition of number.
They have been using the stem sentences: 1 and another makes 2, 1 and 1 and 1 makes 3.
They have composed their own collection of 3 objects.
They Identified when a collection is 3 or not 3.
They are finding out that 4 can be made of four 1s.
In Reception, we will be working on deepening the knowledge of numbers to 10. It is very important to develop a strong foundation of numbers to 10 which will be built on over time as they progress through the school.
Next week we are going to be thinking about the question, What is our school environment like?
We will be observing our environment and noticing Autumnal changes.
If you haven’t already, please bring in your wellies. You can leave them on the welly racks outside the classroom doors and take them and leave them as you please.
Week Commencing 26 September 2022
We are delighted with how the children have settled into Reception. We have spent the first week or so establishing routines and making friends but this week we have begun our teaching programme.
We know as parents of Reception children that you want to know what the children have done and learnt, and you don’t always get the information you would like. To help you we will send you a weekly email and put this information on the Reception page of the school website.
Phonics
This week in phonics we have started our new Read Write Inc phonics scheme. We have been learning the sounds m, a, s, d, t this week. To support you at home there are some links below about how the phonics is being taught.

Rhyme of the week
Each week we learn or practise a rhyme because in Reception children should have the opportunity to perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and it also builds vocabulary. Last week we learnt Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and this week we have been learning ‘If you’re happy and you know it’.
Literacy
In literacy we have been reading, ‘The Colour Monster’ which has helped us discuss different feelings.
