Dear parents and carers
As you are aware, I have made several requests for parents to park offsite wherever possible and to avoid parking across the driveways of local residents. Unfortunately, we have had a serious incident this week when an on-coming car mounted the pavement near school, narrowly missing three very young children. I know that everyone is aware of the congestion along Breary Rise and that parents and grandparents are often on a tight schedule. However, I am concerned that children are at risk of serious injury due to dangerous driving. Please do allow extra time for your journey or park further away from school and avoid adding to the congestion. Many thanks for your continued support.
Have a lovely half term holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 24 February.
Rachel Colbourn

We’d like you to feel involved in your child’s learning and maybe build on class discussion around our weekly ‘key questions’
This week’s key question is:
|
|
• What good habits might you adopt having taken part in the device free weekend? |

World Book Day
All Day
On World Book Day children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
World Book Day is a registered charity that works towards giving every child and young person a book of their own. It is also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading.
World Book Day was first celebrated on 23 April 1995, and continues to be recognised on that day.

Traffic measures and safety of our children Councillor Barry Anderson from Leeds City Council has in principle secured funding from the developer Miller Homes for the provision of 2 Speed Indicator Devices for use on Leeds Road. He has been conducting a consultation process and the prevailing thinking is to have a Speed Indicator Device at each end of the village to try and slow down the speed of traffic through the village. Councillor Barry is asking for further input from the school and parents to ensure this commitment comes to fruition. Please email Barry with expressions of support and any further comments on this matter: Barry.Anderson@leeds.gov.uk |

Coronavirus Please note that a letter has been emailed to you today regarding the outbreak of novel coronavirus in China and the subsequent confirmed cases in the UK. There’s currently no cause for concern at the school but I have decided to share guidance from Public Health England on steps you should be taking to prevent the spread of any virus. In addition, I would request that parents do not send their child to school when they are not well enough to learn. I do appreciate it is sometimes difficult to determine how well a child will cope in school, but if they are at risk of spreading infection, please do allow them time to recover and rest at home. |

Tech free follow up We were delighted that 1 in 4 children took up the tech free challenge last weekend. As a follow up to the weekend, we have spent time talking to the children about home routines (where devices are kept overnight for instance) and have been challenging them to make small changes which could have a big impact. Internet safety and well-being is an important part of our Computing curriculum and internet safety is taught from Y1. Thank you for supporting us with initiatives such as the tech free challenge. They provide a great talking point for reflecting on the very many advantages and potential disadvantages of technology. |

Advanced notice: Polling Day We have been informed that on Thursday 7 May, the school will be used as a polling station. The fact that members of the public can access our school hall during the school day is far from ideal. However, as you may know, my official objection to the school being used as a polling station was rejected. On occasions, I have been able to schedule staff training on polling day but training days have all been allocated this year and therefore school will remain open as usual. I will be completing a risk assessment for the day and Leeds Electoral services have confirmed that two security guards will be positioned in the hall from 7:45am-3:15pm. Please note that school will be closed on Friday 8 May as this Bank Holiday replaced the one which had been scheduled for 4 May. |

What makes me choose? Today, in 34H. 34HL and 45S we have been looking at 'What makes me choose?' We began the morning by looking at when we eat snacks, why we eat snacks and what snacks we choose to eat. Later on in the day, we began looking at branding and how branding and advertising can play a huge part in the products we choose from the shelves. We had 3 different types of bread and 3 different types of chocolate to choose from. First, the children had to judge the appearance of the product without its packaging. We then completed a taste test before discussing branding and cost. Interestingly, the cheapest loaf of bread (just 36p) came out the overall winner across the classes with only a handful of children preferring the expensive range. The chocolate had similar results with most of the children deciding that they preferred the mid-range chocolate at 60p per 100g. The children have had some fantastic discussions today. Watch out when doing your next food shop as the children might be looking a little more closely at the branding from now on! Mrs House |

Marketing of Food & Drink Yr 5/6 In Y5/6, we have looked at adverts for food and drink which can use misleading marketing messages in order to make a product seem more healthy for consumers. We then made our own adverts! We looked at how the media portrays celebrities and recognised that celebrities can be presented as role models. However, we talked about whether they may be a good or not-so-good role model for young people. This then led to a discussion about how images can be changed or manipulated by the media and how this can differ from reality. We investigated how the media plays a role in affecting people’s feelings about themselves while accepting and respecting that everyone is different. Mrs Laws |

Girls Football Friday 7 February We played a home match against St Urbans Primary School last Friday and the team did amazingly well! The final score was 1-0 to St Urbans, however the girls did a stirling job throughout the match, with Hattie in goal. The passing has already improved since the last match and I am really proud of how well the team played together. Well done! Mr McKeown |

Reception Class - People Who Help Us Next term in Reception we will be learning about People Who Help Us. We would like to ask those parents who are doctors, nurses or vets, or those who are in the Police force or Fire service (or similar profession) to come into school to talk to the children about their jobs. If you would like to come in, please email the office to organise a suitable day and time after half term. Last year we had a wonderful response from parents and we look forward to seeing you in school! Miss Walsh |

PTA Parents night out Th PTA would like to extend a huge “Thank you” to Hannah Hughes and her team of helpers, who organised another successful Parent's night out at the Rugby club last week. For those of you who attended, I am sure you will agree that it was a really enjoyable night, with great food, music and company. We are still awaiting final figures, but we raised close to £1000 towards our great outdoors project, which is fantastic! The PTA really are unable to hold these events without the help of parents to organise them, so well done to the team. Great Outdoors Project It may appear that not very much seems to be going on with regards our Great Outdoors Project, but behind the scenes, the PTA and various parents have been meeting with Mrs Colbourn to finalise plans and we are delighted to announce a save the date for a parent only, “Spruce up the school” day. On Saturday 2nd May, all parents are welcome to come to school to help us with various tasks including: painting fences, building a car track and helping with various other tasks to spruce up our playgrounds. Please come along to be a part of making our school an even better place for our children. We cannot do this without your help! Timings and other details will be confirmed closer to the time, but feel free to speak to any of the PTA or at the school office if you would like to come along and be involved. Mothers Day Secrets Room Our highly anticipated and popular Mothers Day Secrets Room will be taking place on Friday 20 March. This is a lovely opportunity for your child to pick out a gift, have it hand wrapped by volunteers, in preparation to give to that special lady in their life! It is £3.50 per child, per gift and tickets are available on this link We will be sending out a call for volunteers very soon, so if you can help, please let us know. |

Great British Spring Clean 2020 20 March-13 April Many of our children are very keen on improving and conserving the environment and we do encourage them to contribute to their local community. The Great British Spring Clean has now become an annual event with more than 560,000 people taking part last year and an aim to have over 600,000 participants this year. It is the Country’s biggest massed action environmental campaign. For the past few years the Cleaner Neighbourhoods Teams have supported the event by becoming Local Authority partners; lending participating volunteer groups litter pickers, hi-vis vests and gloves as well as providing bags and collecting the waste afterwards. We will also assist with promoting events on social media. If your child is interested in taking part in Bramhope's 'spring clean' please look on the Keep Britain Tidy website here to find out more. |
