Dear parents and carers
As you are aware, we are challenging as many children as possible to take part in our Device Free Challenge this weekend. This year, the emphasis is very much on well being and the possible negative impact of technology on sleep, free time and family life. If you are taking part in our challenge, please take a photograph of your child showing what they got up to at the weekend when they weren't online. This need not be anything exciting or glamorous, we are just encouraging you and your child to put your phones, tablets or games consoles away for a while!
Linked with this, Safer Internet Day is just a few days away; Tuesday 11 February. Internet safety is integrated into our school curriculum from Y1, but if you do wish to talk about it at home, the UK Safer Internet Centre have released a series of films which could be used as discussion starters. The films can be found here:
https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/sid-films
Enjoy your device free weekend!

We’d like you feel involved in your child’s learning and maybe build on class discussion around our weekly ‘key questions’
This week’s key questions are:
|
|
• What is the best and the worst thing about your phone/ipad/games console?
• What is your favourite thing to do at home when you have free time?
• Why are you taking part in the device free challenge?

Traffic measures and safety of our children
Councillor Barry Anderson from Leeds City Council has in principle secured funding from the developer Miller Homes for the provision of 2 Speed Indicator Devices for use on Leeds Road. He has been conducting a consultation process and the prevailing thinking is to have a Speed Indicator Device at each end of the village to try and slow down the speed of traffic through the village. Councillor Barry is asking for further input from the school and parents to ensure this commitment comes to fruition. Please email Barry with expressions of support and any further comments on this matter: Barry.Anderson@leeds.gov.uk
We are still experiencing problems with a small number of parents dropping off right outside school or parking in the staff car park. Not only does this block the driveways of local residents and block our teaching team in, children are also dodging between moving cars at the start and end of the school day . Please, please park off site and walk into school across the school playground. This is the only safe route into school.

Tchoukball
I was lucky enough to accompany a school team of Tchoukball players to Harrogate High this Wednesday. As you may know, we introduced Tchoukball to KS2 last year and it is the fastest hand ball sport in the world today. Invented in the late 1960s, Tchoukball is a team sport of 7 players that unites all key sporting skills; athleticism, concentration, respect for oneself and the opposition and teamwork. Our team of 8 players demonstrated all these skills this week and remained undefeated throughout all 5 games!
A huge well done to Oliver Bates, Joseph Davy, Poppy Davy, James Gill, Jake Nuttall, Charlie Poole, Saul Rasche and Thomas Smith.
We are very proud of you all!

Robinwood
On Wednesday 29 January, 39 very excited children and 4 even more excited staff set off for Robinwood! When we arrived, it was sunny despite the forecast of snow. We set off on our first activities straight after lunch.
Throughout the three days, the children conquered fears, pushed themselves and encouraged each other. They displayed brilliant team work and even managed to beat the teachers in the evening team challenges.
All of the Robinwood staff were impressed by the children’s manners, their respect and their willingness to have a go. We were really pleased with how they slept!

Robinwood Children's Quotes
"I enjoyed the zip wire and the thing that challenged me the most was the piranha pool, but I managed to get through it. We encouraged each other on the Night Line because a lot of people didn't want to go any further." Orla
"I really enjoyed Robinwood because everything was so much fun. On the climbing wall I challenged myself because normally I don't like climbing walls but I reached the top and I really liked it. The Night Line was so fun but a couple of times I thought I couldn't do it. Working as a team was so fun!" Chloe
"I had a great time at Robinwood! I especially enjoyed the big swing, big zipline and also caving. At the start, when I was at the top of the trapeze, I thought it would be quite a challenge, but after I jumped and caught the first bar I got the hang of it. I think people encouraged me on the trapeze because everyone was chanting my name. All in all it was so fun!" Polly
"Robinwood was amazing. I loved the dungeon of doom because we were all working as a team to solve the puzzles. The piranha pool challenged me when we had to slide across the pole and I can't thank my team enough for being so encouraging." Mathilda

Girls Football
On Monday afternoon we witnessed a great display of resilience from the Girls Football Team!
We were badly beaten by a stronger team, however the girls played as though they only lost by a couple of goals. Charlotte scored our only goal in tremendous style and Hattie was a fantastic captain, leading the hand shakes and cheering for the opposing team at full time!
The girls had a great time and are looking forward to their next match. Well done everyone!!

Leeds Schools Cross Country Finals
On Wednesday afternoon eight boys from Key Stage 2 took part in the Leeds Cross Country Finals at Temple Newsam. The boys were selected due to their excellent results in the Leeds Schools Cross Country League.
In the first race, Thomas and Samuel represented Bramhope against the best Year 3 runners from Leeds schools. Both boys finished in the top twenty in a field of more than 120 runners! In the Year 4 race, Callum and Fraser ran incredibly well and finished within ten places of each other. Oliver J finished third in the Year 5 race with Fletcher finishing within the top 15. In the final Year 6 race, Oliver P finished in third place in a very close fought battle, with Joseph coming an impressive 11th.
It was a great event and we look forward to the West Yorkshire Cross Country finals which take place next month.

Historical Association Quality Mark
As part of our commitment to ensure that we provide a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum for our children, we have made the decision to put ourselves forward for the Historical Association Quality Mark. The process takes one year to complete with final assessment taking place in February 2021. As History Leader, I would like to hear your opinions of how history is taught at Bramhope and how your children feel about the subject through their conversations with you at home. I have sent a questionnaire out via parentmail this week - it would really help me to guide our future learning and ongoing curriculum review if you could complete it.
Many thanks
Mrs Stewart

Hug on a Tray Donations - Thank you!
This week, Lesley from Chevin Socialites came to collect the 'Hug on a Tray' donations and was overwhelmed by the generosity of the staff, parents and children of Bramhope Primary.
These items are now on their way to the Bexley Wing of Leeds St James Hospital, where the food and drink items will be used on Wards 88 & 89. Items are available for patients and family/friends in the day care as well as in the rooms on ward for in-patients and their visitors. In addition, the gift items will be used in fundraising events such as raffles and tombolas. Money raised is used to pay for the cost of televisions in the rooms which, if paid for by patients, would cost £10/day.
THANK YOU for you continued support and generosity of our annual charity work which we coordinate with World Cancer day. This is the third year we have supported this charity.

Reception Class - People Who Help Us
Next term in Reception we will be learning about People Who Help Us.
We would like to ask those parents who are doctors, nurses or vets, or those who are in the Police force or Fire service (or similar profession) to come into school to talk to the children about their jobs.
If you would like to come in, please email the office to organise a suitable day and time after half term.
Last year we had a wonderful response from parents and we look forward to seeing you in school!
Miss Walsh

Clubs update
As you may know, it has not been possible to offer Forest club this term. Unfortunately, the numbers of pupils signed up meant the club wasn't viable to run. However, you may be interested to hear that we are offering a new STEM Club after half term. This club is designed to offer children the chance to explore aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) through designing and making. Children will be working on a different project each week and the club will initially run for six weeks, until the Easter holiday. Please click here for more details.

Great British Spring Clean 2020
20 March-13 April
Many of our children are very keen on improving and conserving the environment and we do encourage them to contribute to their local community.
The Great British Spring Clean has now become an annual event with more than 560,000 people taking part last year and an aim to have over 600,000 participants this year. It is the Country’s biggest massed action environmental campaign.
For the past few years the Cleaner Neighbourhoods Teams have supported the event by becoming Local Authority partners; lending participating volunteer groups litter pickers, hi-vis vests and gloves as well as providing bags and collecting the waste afterwards. We will also assist with promoting events on social media.
If your child is interested in taking part in Bramhope's 'spring clean' please look on the Keep Britain Tidy website here to find out more.
