Dear Parents and Carers,
We've made it! Following a fun-filled week we are very grateful for your support in all things Christmassy and for all your good wishes for the coming holiday. As we come to the end of our longest school term I'm sure that September feels like a dim and distant memory and it is important to remember just how much progress has been made since then. We do talk a lot about the importance of trying your best in school and although not everyone can receive a certificate or commendation, everyone should be congratulated for their efforts.
At the end of today's celebration assembly we said our fond farewells to Mrs Arbon and Mrs Lamb. I am sure you will agree with me that both members of staff have been a hugely positive influence within school and it has been heartwarming to hear our children talk about what they have learnt from them. We can all remember someone from our own school days who had an impact on us and in some instances, changed the course of our lives. I am very grateful for the commitment both Mrs Arbon and Mrs Lamb have shown over the many years they have worked at Bramhope. In every instance they have gone above and beyond and we will certainly miss them. On the plus side, they will be moving to Kingfisher Buddies and Cliffe House respectively so many children will continue to see them regularly and they will remain a part of our Bramhope family.
Finally, I hope that everyone enjoys a well deserved break. We look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday 7 January; Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Musical showcase
Thank you to our school choir and musicians for entertaining us on Wednesday. More than 30 children played either individually or in small groups and our choir sang beautifully and unaccompanied. Thank you to Miss Gregson for all her hard work with our Christmas choir this term-she will be looking for choir members again in January so do come along if you are interested in being part of our school choir.
On the day of the showcase, we also had an enterprising team of children (and mums) who made and served refreshments in aid of cancer research. The children raised £44.32 in total and a special thank you to Molly and Melissa who planned and advertised the project demonstrating excellent organisational skills.

Welcome to Harriet Heald
As you may know, Mrs Heald will be joining us in the New Year, replacing Mrs Lamb and teaching art and DT through the whole school.
I’m really excited about my new role of teaching Art and Iook forward to starting in the New Year. I have two sons at the school, Charlie (Year 3) and Lewis (Year 1), and am delighted to be joining the staff team. I am a qualified teacher and I taught for many years before taking a career break to look after my boys. I love being creative, and in my spare time I write children’s books, make silver jewellery and write songs with my husband. I also enjoy keeping fit and running. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

This week we have had our second PSHE Day across Key Stage 2.
In our 3/4 classes the children spent the day investigating what bullying is and how we can define bullying.
The children spent time in small groups with some scenarios where bullying was taking place; they had to role play what they would do in that situation and how they might try to prevent it happening. The children's ideas were really interesting and they were empathetic towards the victim and the bully, looking at deeper reasons why bullying might be taking place.
The children also had to identify different types of bullying such as racism and different places bullying can take place, such as in person or online, through gaming and on social media.
Finally, the children created their own top tips for what to do if you you are being bullied, including an explanation of the Bystander Effect. If you're not sure what this is, why not ask your child to explain the Bystander Effect to you?
In Y4/5/6, we started the day by looking at how to cross the road using Stop, Look, Listen and Think. We also discussed dangers on the road such as playing with a ball, listening to music or looking at a mobile phone. After that, we thought about our first journeys such as to high school or to the shops and how we would keep safe.
Using the Think!map, we identified where accidents occurred. Following that, we studied a map of Bramhope and located possible danger areas. We then got into groups and planned our own road safety campaigns.

Year 5 Swimming Week
This week Year 5 have enjoyed swimming lessons practising lengths, developing different strokes and learning life saving techniques. 95% of pupils met all three National Curriculum aims ; swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform a life saving technique.
On the fourth day we returned to Holt Park for an intra-school swimming gala. In teams children raced their peers in freestyle, backstroke, body board and water polo races. Team 2 won overall with a score of 12 points.
I would like to thank parents for their support, positive feedback and for sending all children with the correct kit.
The children had this to say:
'We learnt a lot and it was so much fun,' Lara.
'Awesome,' Cassius.
'We would love to come again,' Niamh.

Leeds Schools Cross Country League
On Saturday morning, children from Years 3 to 6 took part in the fourth round of the Leeds Schools Cross Country League at Middleton Park.
The under nine girls raced first, with Farrah making a confident debut for her first ever cross country race. Under nine boys were up next. A slip on the start line for three of our runners meant there was catching up to do, but despite this Callum managed to come back from last place to finishing a very impressive 14th with Thomas not far behind in 22nd. Under 9 boys secured third place as a team.
While we waited for the Under 11 boy's race, the weather became progressively worse with heavy rain and strong winds determined to spoil our morning. The boys showed excellent resilience and as the start time approached they removed their waterproofs, completed their warm ups and jostled into position. All boys ran exceptionally well, with Year 5 Oliver leading the team and finishing in 6th place. Big thanks to a determined effort from Bramhope, who won another third place in the Under elevens team league. Well done!
There are two races left in the league and I would particularly encourage girls who are thinking of taking part to contact me using pe@bramhopeprimaryschool.co.uk

Middleton Park Race Report (Thomas Hetherington)
The 4th race in the Leeds Schools Cross Country series was at Middleton Park on 14 December 2019. I am writing this because I want to tell everybody how well our teams are doing.
The weather was very wet and the ground was very muddy so I think off road shoes are better for this sort of race. It felt good to be running for Bramhope Primary School because we have a good team and even though the weather was horrible, everyone enjoyed it!
We warmed up with my Dad and I would give it 5 stars. First, the under 9 girls set off at 10 o’clock. This race was special as we had our first girl, Farrah running and representing Team Bramhope.
Second, was the under 9 boys. Callum was first finisher for the team, with Thomas, James and Fraser also counting. We were pleased that Alfie, James and Tom were running for Bramhope for the first time.
After that came the under 11 girls. We didn’t have anyone in this race and we would love to see some under 11 girls joining us. Next was the under 11 boys race. Oliver was the first to finish for Bramhope and the other counters for the team were Oliver, Joseph, and Fletcher.
Both the under 9 boys team and the under 11 teams came third. This is a really good result. Well done to everyone who took part.
The next race will be at Prince Henrys Grammar School on 7 March 2020.
Come and join us!

CHRISTMAS WISHES FROM THE PTA As we wind down from another hugely successful term of fundraising, we would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to Sarah Boycott, supported by Maike and Susan, and to every one of the amazing volunteers - not forgetting our very own Mrs Flower, Mrs Lawson and Mrs Stewart - for all their hard work and for giving up their time to organise a wonderful Christmas craft and movie night for the children on 13th December. I am sure you will all agree, the children had an absolutely fantastic night which raised over £1,100.00 towards our great outdoors project. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported the event!! NATIVITY COFFEE STALL We took the opportunity at the KS1 Christmas Nativities to serve refreshments. This enabled us to raise a further £250 towards our great outdoors project. Thank you for buying our drinks and pastries and supporting us. We will definitely be back at the next event and look forward to honing our barista skills. PARENTS NIGHT OUT Our next event will be the parents night out on Saturday 8 February. Please join us for a night of eating, dancing and lots of fun. This year we will be enjoying a feast of pulled pork, loaded nachos, chilli and treats. Tickets will be available to buy from 7th January. |
