We like you to feel involved in our 'Big Think-Big talk' assemblies.
This week our theme is National Children's Day and Leonard's Story
The key question we are asking is:
Can you help?
|
|
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Sunday was National Childrens' Day, a day to focus on children's universal rights. Many of you will know that we have a link with a school in Uganda and I used our Big think assembly as an opportunity to ask children to think about their rights and life experiences compared with those of Leonard who is shown in this photo:
|
|
|
A particular message from the assembly was the right to have an education, something Leonard lacks. Many children have been inspired to organise a fund-raising event as a result of this assembly, so thank you in advance for your support. Please let me know if you would like to find out more about Leonard or our link school in Bombo https://childrenofhope.org.uk/

Winning entry!
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of joining Layla Atkinson and her parents at Harrogate Ladies' College. There were 99 entries in the Inspirational woman essay writing competition and the writing standard was excellent. Finalists were treated to a lovely lunch and guest speakers read the winning entries in each category. We were all delighted when Layla was awarded first prize for her amazing essay. She received book vouchers for herself and the school, and we are all very proud of her achievement. Well done, Layla!

School Council
Now that the Friendship benches are in place and in use, school council are working on their next summer project... We have put in a bid for a grant, so we can plan an event designed to benefit the school and its learners so watch this space!
School council were elected from a blind vote across all KS2 classes. School Council meet with me each week to listen and share our ideas. We also learn how to (politely) disagree, how to compromise and what democracy feels like. Thank you to all our school council for the thought and effort you put into your role!

Uniform
As we head into the second half of the summer term, a handful of pupils are not wearing correct school uniform. As you are aware, children should be wearing school shoes (not trainers) and school trousers rather than tracksuits bottoms. Girls should not be wearing leggings for school. The only exception to this is PE day (when children should come to school in their PE kit) and our Y6's who have permission to wear their Leavers' sweatshirt from today.
I do understand that parents may be unwilling to buy new uniform at this stage of the school year, particularly those in Y6. If this is the case, please ask in the office about our pre-loved uniform.
It is very important to maintain a calm, working atmosphere until the end of the school year and wearing correct uniform is an import marker in maintaining high standards during term time.

Skipton Castle
On Monday, Year 1 went on their very first school trip, and what a school trip it was!
We travelled to Skipton Castle to support our historical enquiry skills by seeking answers to key questions which are 'Are castles only built for Kings and Queens?' and 'How have castles changed over time?'.
We found out that like many castles we have researched, Skipton Castle has changed a lot in the 900 years it has been there and was very different from the stone building we see today.

Reception have been learning about the life cycles of animals. We have been incubating eggs in the classroom and observing them closely. This week they have started to hatch! The children enjoyed watching the eggs crack, the beaks poking out and then the chicks appearing and drying off their feathers. The children have learnt how to look after the chicks and how they turn from eggs, hatchlings, chicks and then to hens. Thank you to the parents who have helped us with this project.

Year 1 door Outdoor library
|
|
|
This week we were thrilled to start using our beautiful reading bench, funded by the Bramhope PTA. As part of our playground development, we wanted to help take reading outside, especially as the warmer months are now upon us.
I met with our KS1 reading ambassadors to discuss how and when we use the area, and we then took our ideas back to classes to finalise choices and make a democratic decision.
We as a year group have decided to open the library to the whole of KS1 to enjoy as a calm, quiet reading area during fair weather playtimes and lunchtimes. We have also decided that we need your help! We would welcome donations of high-quality picture books for children to enjoy outdoors. Both fiction and non-fiction reads are welcome, all that we ask is that they are KS1 appropriate in terms of their ‘wordiness’ (the KS1100 book challenge info on our website is a good gauge of what we’re looking for ideally) and undamaged.
Please send any donations to Miss Parker, Year 1 teacher and early reading lead. Massive thanks to the PTA for the donation of the reading bench – we are hugely grateful!

Playground Safety
As a key stage have been doing lots of work with the children to make our playtimes and lunchtimes as safe, happy and calm as we can. One of our key messages is that it is unsafe to climb on or to jump off the edges of the stage, fences and flower beds. We have noticed that this is happening in the playground after school, and would really value your support in reinforcing these safety rules after school has ended, to avoid the children thinking that there are exceptions to these rules.
Many Thanks - The KS1 Team
