We like you to feel involved in our 'Big Think-Big talk' assemblies.
This week our theme is Being Sun Safe
The key question we are asking is:
Can you stay sun safe this term?
|
|
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to the summer term! Despite the wet and windy weather, we remain optimistic that summer is on the way and the sun will come out eventually! As you would expect, we want our pupils to enjoy being outside. Here are the ways we aim to work with you to ensure children stay safe in the sun:
At school
- All children have at least one educational session about sun safety at the start of the summer term.
- In hot weather, we remind children about the importance of sun protection before going outside.
- Regardless of the weather, all children have access to their water bottle and are encouraged to drink little and often throughout the day
- We have two cool water dispensers in school: one in KS1 and one in KS2.
- Picnic tables have been placed in the shade of trees on the field so that children in KS2 can enjoy a sandwich lunch outside.
- In hot weather, children are encouraged to stay in the shade under the playground canopy or in the shade of trees.
- In very hot weather, vigorous activity is limited, and PE may be relocated inside.
In addition, we ask that parents help us with the following:
- Where needed, teaching your child how to take off his or her jumper and fasten buttons by themselves
- Making sure your child has a hat for playtimes and PE lessons
- Making sure your child has a school water bottle. Please order via Scopay
- Making sure you have applied a high factor sunscreen to your child before they come to school
- Making sure that if sunscreen is sent into school, it is clearly labelled with your child's name.
- Where necessary, teaching your child how to apply sunscreen within the school day
Thank you for your support. We look forward to the start of summer!

Last term Year 3 and 4 welcomed Mr Storey, who is Sophie's Grandad, into school to talk to us about bees and beekeeping. Sophie often helps her Grandad tending to the bees and they both shared lots of interesting facts with us. We looked at a new hive (luckily there were no bees yet!) and Sophie showed us her beekeeping outfit. The children got to taste honey and look at some real honeycomb. They were fascinated and asked lots of questions. Did you know that the lifecycle of a bee is very short, and they have very specific jobs during this time? Or that bees don't go down your wellies, but they will fly up your trousers!
We all want to say a big thank you to Sophie and her Grandad for sharing this information with us.

West Yorkshire Cross Country Finals
On Thursday 20th April, children who qualified from the Leeds Cross Country Finals took part in the West Yorkshire Cross Country finals to race against children from Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford and Wakefield.
Bert, Austin and Emilia also ran in their year groups and all finished in the top 20. Farrah was as consistent as ever, finishing in the top 5. Last month, Farrah ran in the national finals, and she has been a real inspiration to the younger girls.
The Year 6 boys had qualified as a team and managed to finish first overall, securing a rather large trophy and gold medals!
'It's been great to run for Bramhope, we've raced since Year 3 and really enjoyed it. It would be great to see Bramhope children running when we race for Prince Henry's next year,'
'We've loved running for Bramhope and we'd love other children to do cross country when we go to Year 7,'

Year 5 Swimming Week
This week children in Year 5 have been enjoying swimming and water safety lessons which are a statutory element of the PE national curriculum. From Monday to Thursday, every child in Year 5 took part in swimming lessons where they honed their technique, improved their stamina and swam brilliantly.
On Thursday we practised practical water safety techniques in the swimming pool including instructing a person in danger of drowning, providing a float to someone in danger and treading water.
To complete our practical lessons, we held an intra-school swimming gala where every child had the ability to race heats in their houses to qualify for the Year 5 finals.
On Friday, we gathered once more to talk about water safety and the dangers of open water swimming.
Year 5s top tips for staying safe in the water were:
- Beware of cold-water shock
- Do not swim without an adult
- The water depth changes can be unpredictable
- Underwater objects and hazards may not be visible
- Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away

Change & Transition: Home, school, family and friends
With Sue O’Leary-Hall from Thesan Coaching
Thursday May 4th 6.30-8pm
Changes and new situations are an inevitable part of life but can sometimes seem challenging. Children (and adults) do not always find them straightforward. Learning about change and how to cope with it will help children with transitions of all kinds.
At this time of year parents and children begin to think about the moves into a new school year, change of teacher, a new key stage or a move to High School.
Sue O’Leary-Hall will be back in school to present this parent workshop on how you can help support your children with new situations and help build their resilience and adaptability for the future.
Please use the online form HERE to sign up for the workshop. We hope to see lots of you there:
