Thursday 11th November 2021 - Remembrance Day
This week, the children have been learning about the history of the poppy, what the different colours represent (the role of Commonwealth and the role of animals) but most importantly, why we remember.
Last year we commemorated Remembrance Day in our class bubbles so it was wonderful to be able to get KS1 and KS2 together in the hall for a special assembly and jointly observe the 2-minute silence.
A special mention goes to the children from Year 5 and 6 for their beautiful poetry reading: Evan L, Sammy W, Callum L, Sophie H, Audrey W, Lola R, Farrah G, Florence DB, Hollie L, Mollie C.
Thank you to our digital leaders Jack H and Ben W.
Audrey from 5/6L wrote a poem as part of her homework - it is very personal to the village as she mentions all the soldiers whose names are inscribed on the Bramhope War Memorial. We would like to share her poem with you HERE.
5/6L have been reading Tom Palmer's book based on the true story of a group of Yorkshire women known as The Barnbow Lasses.
The story recalls the worst tragedy in the history of the City of Leeds – in terms of people killed – a story however that never made the news headlines of the day. It recalls a dreadful explosion that killed 35 Yorkshire women and girls at the Barnbow Munitions factory at Crossgates during the First World War. In 2012, a number of parks, buildings and streets were renamed in their memory.
Sophie H in Y6 was inspired to include their sacrifice in her remembrance poem, below:
