School Meals

Children have one hour for lunch and meals are staggered between 11.30 to 13.00.
At Bramhope, our school meals are provided by our private caterers, Hutchison. Menus are changed termly and are designed to meet the School Food standards which specify which types of food should be served at school and how often. If you would like to read more about the School Food Standards click HERE.
Most parents opt for their child to have a school lunch, and we currently serve approximately 340 meals a day. Menus are on the school website; meals can be ordered in advance and cost £2.60 per day. There is always a sandwich option available as well as a vegetarian option.
Packed Lunches
Some parents occasionally choose to send their child with a packed lunch, and a minority of children have a packed lunch every day. There are no national regulations in place to support families who provide a packed lunch, however, we want to ensure that we are encouraging all parents to provide a balanced packed lunch for their child. This will not only help their learning; it will encourage them to make healthy choices when they go to secondary school and become young adults.
Children may switch on to school meals at any time by informing the School Office in advance. Please allow one week's notice. Payment can be made via Appetite. The school office will provide parents with the link to join.

Our aims
In school, we teach all children what is meant by a balanced diet and how this can affect their health. Our aim is that all children:
- Learn what we mean by food groups
- Know which foods belong in which food group
- Understand whether their own diet is generally healthy and balanced
- Understand the direct link between diet and physical and dental health
- Make informed choices about their own meals and packed lunches rather than feeling that there are some foods that they should never eat
- Challenge themselves to try something new or make small changes if necessary
Our approach
We teach children about a balanced diet through science lessons, PSHE lessons and school assemblies. What we would expect to see in a healthy packed lunch:
- One portion of fresh fruit such as apples, bananas or grapes
- One portion of vegetables such as cucumber, carrot sticks or tomatoes
- A type of starchy food such as bread, rice, pasta, noodles or crackers
- A type of milk and dairy food such as cheese or yoghurt
- A source of protein such as tuna, egg, chicken or beans
- No more than one high sugar/high fat ‘treat’ such as a cookie, crisps or cereal bar- please do not send any chocolate bars or sweets
- A bottle filled with fresh water-please do not send juice
Whilst we do not ‘police’ packed lunches, we will speak with you or your child if they need to be reminded about our strict ‘no nuts’ policy and encourage them to make healthy choices wherever possible.
Snacks within the school day
Reception and KS1
In Reception, children up to the age of 5 are entitled to a free 189ml carton of milk each day. Once your chid turns 5 parents can pay for milk at break time if they choose to. Please visit Cool Milk to register your child. Free fruit and vegetables are delivered by the Council. This is standard delivery across all schools in Leeds and is for children in Reception and KS1. If you would prefer to send your own fruit or vegetables for children in Reception or KS1, please feel free to do so. Please do not send crisps or other snacks.
KS2
In KS2, some parents choose to pay for their child to have milk in school. This can be arranged through Cool Milk by following this LINK.
If your child is in KS2 and you feel they would benefit from a snack at playtime, please send them with either a portion of fruit or vegetables from home. Please do not send crisps or other snacks.

Free School Meals / Pupil Premium
You can visit the local authority website to read further information about free school meals, by clicking here. To view and download the application form for free school meals please click here.
Once your child is registered for Free School Meals, the school will be able to claim pupil premium funding. For more information regarding pupil premium, please click in the left column to read more.
For Reception pupils starting in the new academic year, please apply for free school meals when their school education begins in September.
If you receive benefits and your child already gets Universal Infant Free School Meals (ie in Reception, year 1 or year 2), you should still register for free school meals. This is so your school can claim funding to support your child at school.
If your child qualifies for 'means tested' free school meals then they also qualify to receive milk free of charge.
